Chainsaw Safety Gear NZ — What You Need Before You Cut (2026)

Every year, chainsaw injuries put people in hospital — many of them experienced operators. The right PPE doesn't just comply with NZ regulations; it can be the difference between a nick and losing a leg. Here's what you need before you pick up a saw.

NZ Regulations for Chainsaw Use

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 requires appropriate PPE for chainsaw operation. WorkSafe NZ guidelines specify chainsaw-rated protective clothing. For professional forestry: NZS 8163:2021 (Safe use of chainsaws). Chainsaw protective clothing rated to EN ISO 11393 standard.

The 6-Piece Chainsaw PPE Kit

1. Chainsaw Helmet with Integrated Protection

Must include: helmet (head protection), face shield (falling debris, bar oil), ear muffs.
Protos INTEGRAL FOREST: all-in-one system — certified helmet, face shield, Class 5 SNR ear muffs.
Why integrated matters: separate components can shift under load; integrated stays aligned.

2. Chainsaw Protective Trousers

Class 1 (20m/s): for hobby and lifestyle block use; protects against kickback.
Class 2 (24m/s): for professional forestry and arborists.
Pfanner chainsaw trousers: trusted by NZ foresters — EN ISO 11393-2 certified.
Must cover from waist to top of boot.

3. Chainsaw Protective Boots

Must have: cut protection in the front upper, steel toecap, ankle protection.
Pfanner BOA Chainsaw Boot Class 2: professional-grade, BOA lacing system for fast on/off.
Regular safety boots are NOT adequate for chainsaw work.

4. Cut-Resistant Gloves

Chainsaw-specific gloves with cut protection on back of left hand (kickback zone).
Esko or similar rated gloves for chainsaw work.

5. Eye & Face Protection

Face shield covers flying chips — mesh or clear polycarbonate.
Clear visor essential when felling or limbing.

6. Hearing Protection

Chainsaws run 100–115dB — serious hearing damage risk.
Class 5 earmuffs or integrated ear protection on helmet (Protos).

Chainsaw Gear for Lifestyle Block & Hobby Use vs Professional

Hobby (occasional use, pruning, firewood): Class 1 trousers, integrated helmet, gloves.
Professional (daily forestry, arborist): Class 2 trousers, Protos or equivalent helmet, chainsaw boots.
